Apr 26 Omolola and her Candle Business

Hello Guys! In this post, my friend Omolola - the owner of Flame2scent candles, talks about her candles and how she started the business. Flame2scent is based in Orlando, Florida and it is one of the best candles I have ever used. Q: Introduce Yourself, what do you do?

A: My name is Omolola, a full-time IT consultant and a candle business owner.

Q: What made you start candle making?

A: For me, entrepreneurship has always been a part of me. I am also a strong believer in having multiple streams of income. In 2021, I researched what business to start, and being an African, I wanted a business that will cut across everyone (not just Africans).

Early this year, I was on YouTube and came across a video of a lady telling her story of how she started her candle business, I instantly got hooked. After watching the video, I started researching candle making, the science behind making candles, and the market projection. With my science background in Chemistry, my love for mixing chemicals made me fall in love with the craft. And here we are today!!!

Q: When did you start officially/unofficially?

A: 18th of March 2022

Q: What were the challenges you went through as a business owner?

A: I went through a few challenges. Firstly, finding the time for the business was challenging especially with my 9-5 job.

Secondly, finding the right wick size for the candle vessel took a while. This required a lot of testing before getting the right wick size in other for the candles to burn clean with little or no sooth.

Q: What were the favorable times when starting the business?

A: Hmmm! I have had a couple but one I will never forget was the day I made my very first candle and it came out good, it had a strong hot throw and the pour was flawless. I will also say anytime I look at the candles I made (it’s just pure joy staring at the end product)

Q: Any previous experience with this business?

A: None

Q: Any advice for anyone starting a candle business?

A: The first piece of advice will be to do a lot of research and testing. Patience and perseverance are also key.

Q: Any advice for anyone starting an entrepreneurship business?

A: if you have it in mind, I will say go for it. The first phase can be rocky and discouraging, but surrounding yourself with people that are optimistic about your vision and goals will help you through those trying times.

Needless to say the fear of failing, you definitely will have those moments thinking “the market is saturated, who will buy my products/services, will people like what I am offering, what if I announce my business to everyone and it fails?” The short answer to these questions is that you just have to start, not starting itself is a failure. Life itself is a risk.
